Free Street Closures for Playing Out in Edinburgh

Posted on: March 16th, 2017

EDINBURGH PLAYING OUT

CITY OF EDINBURGH COUNCIL HAS APPROVED A PILOT

FROM 1ST APRIL – 31ST AUGUST 2017

City of Edinburgh Council has approved a pilot scheme which will allow residents to apply for up to five, free road closures. The closures will allow children to play and residents to socialise between 1 April to 31 August 2017 on streets free of vehicles.

Residents can apply via the Council’s website:

Applications can be made via an online form where full guidance and instructions are given. The team of residents that make up Edinburgh Playing Out are urging those interested to apply as soon as possible as the application process and approval will take up to 6 weeks.

Playing Out is an idea that was born in Bristol and has been a great success in England and Wales. The Edinburgh Playing Out campaign is working towards enabling residents in the city to apply for regular, temporary road closures, so children and residents can play, interact and socialise safely on their streets. The pilot is a huge success for the team who came together to campaign in October 2015 to make Playing Out here in Edinburgh a reality.

Bringing neighbors of all ages together provides a sense of community in a shared space and helps break social isolation particularly for older residents. Playing Out temporarily turns streets into places where residents can sit, talk and watch the children play.

This is a fantastic opportunity for communities to come together and experience their street free of vehicles as it would have been 50 years ago!
