Maureen Child Update 23 February 2018

Posted on: February 23rd, 2018

Dear All

This has been an unbelievably busy week, with hardly time for us Portobello/Craigmillar Councillors to draw breath, so here are just a few things for you today!

The Thistle Centre for Wellbeing, 1 Queen’s Walk are holding a community event next Wednesday 28 February 10am-12noon as part of World Community Arts Day. Come and see progress on the Craigmillar Tapestry and have a look at some of the Craigmillar archives which are safely stored at the Thistle.  The archive display will include items from the personal collection of Helen Crummy, one of the founders of the Craigmillar Festival, and its first Organising Secretary. Helen’s son, Andrew Crummy, will have an exhibition of some of his drawings and will introduce the event. The stitching of the Craigmillar Tapestry brings local people together to reminisce and celebrate the history of Craigmillar whilst capturing the changing face of Craigmillar.  More information from Dani Waddell Connecting Craigmillar Development Worker ( Link Up) Thistle Foundation Telephone: 0131 661 3366; Mobile: 07909 257 415.

There is an actual, real supervised Open Day tomorrow at the Baileyfield Crescent archaeological site.   Sorry for the mix up last Saturday. for which the owner Barratt Homes and AOC Archaeology also apologise.  They did try to cancel, but that message failed to get to all the parts it should have reached, including me.  The gates being wide open, and nobody there in charge, was very confusing. And it all presented quite a health and safety risk.  But nobody actually did get hurt – thankfully!  Sorry to spoil the fun for those coming later in the day, but I reported the error and the site was secured soon after.  The Open Day is tomorrow, Saturday 24 February, 10am to 3pm and that has now been advertised quite widely. It really is well worth having a look to see what remains there as part of Portobello’s proud industrial heritage.  You can get a real sense of what it was like to work there from this article : http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=91%3Aunited-glass-ltd-portobello-edinburgh&catid=40%3Aportobello-glassworks-1829-1968&Itemid=7

Bridgend Growing Communities’ famous long-standing Annual Potato Day is this coming this Sunday 25 February from 11 am to 2pm.  Come early to avoid disappointment, as it’s always busy first thing!  Bridgend are famous for the best organic tattie varieties in town.  The entrance to Bridgend Allotments is at 41 Old Dalkeith Road EH16 4TE.

The next Portobello Community Council is on Monday 26 February at 7:30 pm in Portobello Baptist Church Hall, 185 Portobello High Street. One topic for a report will be the ‘Save the George’ Campaign which the PCC have supported – as a result of their local survey showing that 70% of people did not want to see the opportunity its lost of retaining the building to restore to its original use.  This week’s development management sub Committee of the Planning Committee (aka DM Sub) unanimously agreed with the objectors for Save the George, Portobello Community Council and all four Local Councillors that the case for demolition of the auditorium had not been made and it as contrary to policy. None of the Councillors agreed with the Council officer recommendation. Join us on Saturday 10 March, 1-3pm in St John’s Church Hall. To share Share you ideas, your aspirations for Porty Beach and the Promenade.

Do come along on Wednesday 7 March to Orcadia Creative Learning Centre, 3 Windsor Place to find out more about what they do and see their Spring-themed art exhibition.  Enjoy, the art work, auction, tea and coffee and raffle and learn more about what Orcadia do.  The evening is being hosted by four students for Edinburgh College as part of their learning events management.  So, well worth a visit!

Voting for the Shop Porty Business of the Year Award 2018 is still open – just! Vote for your favourite local shop or business by visiting the Shop Porty Facebook page. Last year’s winner Harry’s Gourmet Treats is likely to be a strong contender again this year, but they can expect competition from several other outstanding local shops and businesses. https://www.facebook.com/shop.porty/

That’s all for now, folks!  Have a great weekend, if you can!

Maureen
