Maureen Child Update 12 April 2019

Posted on: April 12th, 2019

Dear All

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, in partnership with the Edinburgh Shoreline Project, is installing an 80-foot mural along their sea-facing wall. A group of volunteers helped cover up the graffiti around the mural in preparation for installation at the end of April. This mural was inspired by information gathered at their community engagement sessions so that the mural will embody the area’s diverse environment, unique heritage and local community spirit. ED&CH are opening along the Prom on Friday 3 May from 11am – 3pm so do go along to check it out! For more information, please contact Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home on 0131 669 5331 or email fundraising@edch.org.uk

Remember Portobello Heritage Trust AGM and illustrated talk ‘Bridgescapes’ is this coming Monday at Bellfield, 16a Bellfield Street, starting 7.30pm.  http://portobelloheritagetrust.co.uk/

They can try one, or a variety of activities, with five different sessions to choose from running all afternoon on 21 April from 1pm – 4pm. There are sessions for children from age 3 to 11. Planning application has been submitted for a new community-centred building for The Thistle at 13 Queen’s Walk, EH16 4EAA. The building comprises a multi-purpose activity space, a yoga / tai chi studio, workshop and a meditation/mindfulness area. The building is a replacement for the garden suite.  The application reference is 19/01433/FUL. All details of this and other planning applications on the Council’s website: http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20067/planning_applications/288/view_and_comment_on_planning_applications

The annual Portobello Beach Run, organised by Portobello Running Club, will take place on Sunday 23rd June 2019. Times are still to be confirmed as they are tide dependent but hopefully some time around midday. There will be a kids race before the adults race which is 4 miles up and down the beach. Net proceeds will go to the club’s chosen charity for the year which is Street Fit Scotland. More details nearer the time.

Jo Tennant is a photographer based in Portobello, Edinburgh. Photographing stories without words she captures the personalities that drive ideas, the nuances behind brands, the dynamics that makes families so unique and the little moments on a wedding day that can be treasured for years to come.  "Plunge" is a side project that comes from love of adventure, sisterhood and the sea. A collection of images from a winter sea swim in Portobello. Maybe you’re one of them. Maybe you stand on the Prom and watch them in disbelief (that would be me!) This exhibition opens the door to what it feels like to be a part of it.  Exhibition Opens on Wednesday, 24 April 7 pm. Outdoor swimming films will be screened to inspire.

There will be some additional works on the A1/Milton Road – Road Renewal Scheme,  involving more resurfacing on Park Avenue up to Park Lane and also on Duddingston Crescent up to the Milton Link.  This prolongs the overnight working along Milton Road and the necessary diversions.  Local residents will get a hard copy letter dropping through their door, but I have electronic maps and copy residents’ letter if you need it.  I put it on my Facebook Page too.

Portobello Beach Wheelchairs will have Easter Open weekends Saturday 13 and Sunday 14, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 April from 10am until 4pm, each of those days. Their container (corner of Tumbles Car Park) will be staffed and both chairs available for use without booking in advance. Drop in, meet the volunteers, and maybe get on the beach in one of their fab beach wheelchairs. Times may change, subject to weather conditions, so do keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates around any changes.  More here: http://portobellobeach.com/wheelchairs/

As ever, do let me know if you want an update on any issue or have something you want me to take up!

Best wishes

Maureen
