Maureen Child Update 17 January 2020

Posted on: January 17th, 2020

Dear All

Portobello Timebank have a litter pick at Magdalene Glen tomorrow (Saturday 18 January) between 1pm and 3 pm meeting at the bridge over to Asda.  Tea/coffee and cake will be provided and all are very welcome to join in.

The sign-up for garden waste collections is open again from 20 January until 6 February.  This is the last window of opportunity signing up for the year to October 2020.  More here:  https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/gardenwaste

The Club Manager at Powerleague Portobello in Westbank Street has told Porty People Facebook page that they have no intention of leaving. Last year, two of their football pitches were re-laid. . Work has started on the remaining five pitches, turf, boarding and netting.  All the work will be finished by early March. Porty will soon have some of the best playing facilities in Scotland. This should put to bed the idea that the site will be sold for redevelopment any time soon

Meantime, the Edinburgh Leisure pitches at the Jack Kane Centre have been officially opened. More here: https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/news/article/12715/local-derby-officially-opens-new-3g-football-pitches-at-hunters-hall-park#top

As one of their volunteer Board of Non-Executive Directors I am really proud to be part of the team supporting our local social enterprise Create which is going from strength to strength.  Take a look at what we have achieved in the heart of Craigmillar to support local business growth and development through providing accommodation: http://www.createbusinessproperties.com/

The first wave of secure bike parking facilities are planned for Portobello locations in Bath Street, Eastfield, Kings Road, Marlborough Street, Pittville Street, Portobello High Street, and Promenade Terrace.

The Edinburgh City Mobility Plan and the Choices for Edinburgh City Plan 2030 are shortly going out for consultation in tandem. See here the Edinburgh Evening News coverage:  https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/news/article/12714/all-aboard-for-2030-a-greener-healthier-better-connected-capital and https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/news/article/12719/choices-for-a-future-generation-building-a-more-sustainable-edinburgh.  There will be lots of opportunites to have conversations and  help to shape these proposals and ideas.  For example, next week this one is organised EVOC: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/edinburgh-compact-partnership-presents-edinburgh-a-good-place-to-live-tickets-86344515771.  More on all of this next week!

Portobello Timebank Coffee Morning is Tuesday 21 January 11am-12 noon at Al Mare, 272 Portobello High Street. From February, their coffee mornings will be the first and third Thursday each month, the next being Thursday 6 February.

Friends of Porty Prom meet regularly in Bellfield, next being Tuesday the 21 January at 7pm when they’ll be talking about Kings Place, planters, walking maps, murals, and lots more! Do go along if you want to get involved.

Portobello Amnesty has their Annual Quiz  on 7 February and they are always really good fun.  They open and 7.30pm for an 8 pm start upstairs in the Artisan Lounge Bar, but it’s advisable to come sharp as it can get full.

The root cause of excessive ‘ponding’ on Brighton Place during the recent torrential is still being investigated and any blockades will be jetted. The road is open and will remain so, but the contractor still has work to do to make sure the new drainage infrastructure works properly.

Police Scotland and environmental wardens were made aware of an abandoned caravan In Christian Grove and I was assured it would soon be removed. With issues like this and flytipping, you can contact northeast.environmentalwardens@edinburgh.gov.uk

Do you have an idea for a project which would benefit the local community? There is a forthcoming grant funding event on Thursday 30 January, 10 am – 1 pm at the White House, 70 Niddrie Mains Road, EH16 4BG.  It’s supported by Portobello/Craigmillar Neighbourhood Network and the Community Alliance Trust and organised with Toby Joss from The National Lottery. Toby will be offering appointments to assist local people and local groups to increase awareness of lottery funding opportunities.  We expect the event to be busy, so it is advisable to book your place by phoning 0131 468 1934 or emailing info@thewhitehousekitchen.org.uk

Two pop-up events are coming up to show what is possible for small local improvement projects.  To make these happen, neighbourhoods come together to decide their priorities. Events are planned for the week after next on Tuesday 28 January 1pm – 3pm at Craigmillar Library and Thursday 30 January, 4.30pm – 6.30pm at Magdalene Community Centre.

Do let me know if you want ‘updated’ on anything else or have further questions or comments.

Best wishes for a good weekend!
