Come and take a walk around Porty’s artist studios, visit some of the hidden spaces around the beach and promenade showing site specific art, and see local artists’ works in shops and cafes, and at the mini maker’s market.

The art walk preview opens on Thursday 3rd September at The Skylark, 241 Portobello High Street from 7-9pm.

The preview night will showcase the work of local artist, Jemma Derbyshire, together with specially commissioned shorts from artist-filmmakers, Bill Millett and Ad Howells, about the locality and environment of Edinburgh’s Seaside.

Site specific works will be placed in many hidden and unfamiliar parts of the prom and beach drawing attention to our locality. Amongst the works, Emma Macleod creates a clay ceramic installation for the Figgate Burn tunnel playing homage to Portobello’s industrial past and Lauren Fox creates a tidal octopus positioned at the end of the groyne on bath street, only fully visible at low tide. On the high street St Mark’s Church is home to a new installation from Julian Capes.

Artists’ open studios will be open fri 4th, sat 5th and sun 6th september.

Jenny Martin and Karl Stern will be opening up their studios on the prom, Jude Nixon on Bath St, Jenny Pope and Paul MacPhail open up their garden spaces on Dalkeith St and Regent St, Ben Craven’s irregular polyhedra are at Southfield Place, and Juliana Pope’s studio is open at Tribe Porty.

Two new extra studios now participating – Jane Rutherford opens up just off the prom, along John St Lane West, and Marta Giron is another artist at Tribe Porty opening up her space.

Many local shops and cafes will be participating in the art walk by hosting artists’ works, including:

breadshare bakery, faver’s candy emporium, the skylark, tipsy mallows, velvet easel gallery, st mark’s church, dalriada, cove, the beach house, the tide art gallery + cafe, the wild flower shop, friday street antiques and the porty light box.

The Tide Art Gallery & Cafe will be home to a mini popup market and exhibition centred around ideas of mapping and navigation – open friday 4th to sunday 6th september

‘In-bound’ an interactive book work from Scott & Barron will also be at The Tide during the event which will map the journey of the art walk. Come along to add your own journey around the walk. The book will also be projected at the opening preview night at The Skylark, 7-9pm, Thurs 3rd Sept.
