Community Access to Sports Facilities at New Portobello High School

Now that the new school has opened its doors to pupils, we are keen to ensure that the local community can also enjoy the new sports facilities on their doorstep.  I thought it would be useful to update you on the arrangements.  We are working with Edinburgh Leisure and they will manage the facilities for us outside school hours.

Following on from our successful Community Sports Hubs arrangements at several existing secondary schools in the city we had decided to designate Portobello High School as a community sports hub.  This means priority access for bookings will be given to local clubs, particularly those already working with our Active School Coordinators to maximise opportunities for local children to participate in sport.  Clubs who have already utilising facilities in the school include:

Portobello Amateur Swimming Club

Portobello Netball Club

Portobello Volleyball Club

Portobello Community Football Academy

Portobello Rugby Club (Juniors & Adults)

Cavalry Park Sports Club

City of Edinburgh Basketball Club (Kings)

Edinburgh Taekwondo Club (juniors)

Casual paying bookings can be taken two weeks in advance and these can be booked through Edinburgh Leisure.

As you will be aware, the Council gave a commitment to bookable free access to the pitches to local residents (EH7 6LD, all EH8, all EH15 and EH21 8RL/8RQ) and they will be able to phone Edinburgh Leisure each Monday morning for available slots that week.  Hirers will be asked to show photo ID and proof of address when they arrive for their bookings.  There will also be the opportunity for local residents to turn up on the day of required use (from 6pm on weekdays) to find out what is available.
