Hello winter! We have been reminded of winter’s cold, yet there are still brave sea swimmers regularly diving in. In case you missed the benefits of cold therapy, check this out.

At Tribe, we have finished this year’s ULab Portobello Hub and had a brilliant showcase of the Find Your Voice course. The Ferret held an investigative journalism workshop and AGM and Upcycled World held their usual furniture painting course and also held a dreamcatcher workshop and an Eco jewellery making course.

New classes this month have included early Wednesday morning MySore Yoga with Mark, Kundalini Yoga with Lokeshvarii on Thursday evenings and Yoga for mum and baby with Linzi on Tuesday mornings.

Regular classes are now back in full swing, check out our online calendar for more information.

Linzi joins our Tribe Family with her Mummy & Baby Yoga class on Tuesday mornings at 1030-1130am. This class will encourage you relax and stretch into your day as well as building strength and love back into those BAP’s (Back, Abs and Pelvic Floor) as we also take Baby through gentle Baby Yoga moves using touch, love and song.  For more information see here

Christmas Makers Fair

We are very excited about our fair on the 10th December. We have 30 super talented makers selling the perfect Christmas gifts. We also have Crumbs of Portobello offering delicious soup, pastries, cakes and more.
We are having an upcycled gift wrapping station so if you would like to tap into your inner wrapper and volunteer, please get in touch here.  Also, if you have spare maps, newspaper, ribbon or the like, we would love your donations. Creativity is the game, so we like all sorts.

Coworking in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is home to a close tech community and hundreds of entrepreneurs inspired by the success of Skyscanner, FanDuel, Float, Craneware, Twig and many more Scottish native tech and creative startups that have gone global.

Naturally, all those young businesses have to work, create and network to reach the stars. And coworking is the best choice to start from. Tribe Porty is listed as one of the best in Edinburgh. Read more here.

Why a Citizen’s Basic Income experiment is vital

Portobello’s Peter McColl from NESTA writes,
One of the most exciting developments of the last year has been the creation of a Citizen’s Basic Income Network (CBIN) in Scotland. Bringing together a wide range of people who have an interest, and who have done work on citizen’s income, the group has been working on how to promote the idea of a citizen’s income, universal income or basic income. It builds on the excellent work of Guy Standing, and of the RSA’s Anthony Painter. And in Scotland on the work of Professor Ailsa Mackay, Annie Miller, Willie Sullivan, and many others – with the promotional work by Common Weal and the RSA being especially significant.  – See more here.

This month we welcome 2 new co-working members.

Tribe Porty welcomes Aliya Ryan. Aliya works for the US based organisation Digital Democracy, which aims to support marginalised communities with appropriate technology to defend their rights. Currently Aliya working on two indigenous mapping projects in the Ecuadorian Amazon, with communities who want to create territory maps to gain greater land rights from the Government and protect their land from oil exploitation, palm plantations and other threats. With them they are developing a new open source, offline mapping tool – Mapeo – a bit like Open Street Map but that will work in the middle of the rainforest with no internet or server. Aliya studied social anthropology and have just completed the MSc in Gastronomy at QMU. She is also really interested in issues of social justice related to food, growing and nourishment – both in Edinburgh and around the world, and have just moved to Portobello.

We also welcome Mathieu Causse. Mathieu works for ADAGOS, a start-up based in Toulouse, France. Mathieu is working in the Big Data field which basically means finding answers based on the huge data quantity that all kinds of connected objects are nowadays able to collect. Most of the time customers don’t have the clue how to deal with such an amount of information to solve their problems. Clearly last years improvements in what’s called ‘Deep Learning’ methods are a game changer. Just think about the ‘Google Self-Driving Car’ which engineers estimate it will take 5 billions kilometers of recorded driving to make perfectly safe, i.e. to train the embedded software to appropriately react to all kinds of events. How do you cope with that tremendous amount of data to train an Artificial Intelligence system? So far, Mathieu works with the Renault Formula One Team on these related topics, which is quite an exciting challenge for the kid he still is!

Lorna Sherwood has completed her one month here at Tribe and now now is off to commit to her course full time. Best of luck Lorna and keep in touch!

More of the growing crew here.

Healing the Heart of Democracy: Parker Palmer on Holding the Tension of Our Differences in a Creative Way

"The politics of our time is the “politics of the brokenhearted” — an expression that will not be found in the analytical vocabulary of political science or in the strategic rhetoric of political organizing. Instead, it is an expression for the language of human wholeness. There are some human experiences that only the heart can comprehend and only heart-talk can convey. Among them are certain aspects of politics, by which I mean the essential and eternal human effort to craft the common life on which we all depend." Read more here.

There is a space within you where you are already perfect, whole, and complete.

It is pure consciousness – the space inside of which all thoughts come and go.

When you rest in the feeling of this space, the warmth of it heals your mind and body. When you operate from the infinite creative potential of this space, you produce high levels of performance and creative flow. When you sit in the openness of this space with others, you experience a level of connection and intimacy that is breathtakingly enjoyable and filled with love.
