Porty Art Walk Whats On – Sat/Sun 26th & 27th Sep

Posted on: September 18th, 2020

Sat/Sun
26th/27th Sept

Sea, Sea and more Sea!

The sea takes centre stage for our second weekend:
the sea as a means for arrival; for temporary shelter; to connections with other waters near & far; and of collaborative working, with a small programme of installations, live art & projection evenings arranged over two days.

OUTDOOR INSTALLATIONS + LIVE ART
SAT 26 + SUN 27 SEPT

Iman Tajik ‘Where the Body Meets the Land’
(Portobello Beach, by Brunstane Rd N)

Tajik uses his artwork as a tool to weld together trauma and awareness as he brings his frustration to the fore with jarring silence in this durational performance (12-4pm, sat+sun). In an almost unwavering manner, Tajik will create an indented space in the sand as he paces hundreds of thousands of times from a flag pole positioned on the beach, hoisting up a shimmering gold emergency blanket, to the seashore and back. This act of line making refers to the thousands of refugees and migrants that have disembarked, including those that did not survive, onto UK shores.

Rhona Taylor’s ‘Gatherings’
(Joppa Bandstand, Portobello Prom)
An installation that looks at the role of the Firth of Forth as a shelter for the ships that gathered in these waters during the global pandemic. During the lockdown, four cruise ships and two English Channel ferries were given refuge in the Forth, becoming a visual reminder that the world had come to a standstill.

‘Gatherings’ invites visitors to consider some of the language that has changed or been given new significance in 2020, as gatherings first become illegal, and are then subject to new rules and laws.
