Dear All
Please find my report to last Monday’s Portobello Community Council attached. I am hoping to get a chance to prepare another one for Craigmillar Community Council.
The consultation information for the new St John’s RC Primary School is now live on the Council’s website and can be downloaded at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/stjohnsprimaryconsultation Hard copies of the consultation paper can be collected from St John’s RC Primary School or can be sent by post if requested through calling (0131) 469 3136. Reference copies are also available in Portobello, Piershill and Craigmillar Libraries and in local nurseries. As mentioned below a public meeting will be held as part of the consultation process. Anyone with an interest in the proposal is welcome to come along to the meeting, to be held in: St John’s RC Primary School on Tuesday 28 October 2014 (7pm – 8.30pm) Council staff will attend the meeting to provide more information and to take questions. Anyone attending should call (0131) 469 3136 no later than 20 October if they have any requests for translation services or childcare to be provided at the meeting. The Council would like to hear from as many people as possible. Views on the proposals including any concerns or suggestions for improvement, to arrive no later than Friday 14 November 2014, can be e-mailed to newschoolbuildings@edinburgh.gov.uk or posted to the address below.

Brighton Place
We are about to go into another Budget round and consultation and I am hopeful that we will be able to identify funds to invest in rebuilding the carriageway of Brighton Place properly. It looks like it may take a total of £1.5 million to complete the full length and breadth of Brighton Place with setts, as they are now. There has been some discussion locally about whether or not the whole surface should be paved in setts, in keeping with its status as a Conservation Area and what the phasing that the work might entail. I have had a bit of discussion with Councillor Lesley Hinds as Convener of the Transport Committee and requested that we have a presentation, possibly to Portobello Community Council, to facilitate a wider discussion of the possible design options. We also need to know what the work will entail for disruption, timescales and diversions.

All funds raised will directly benefit the school. Teachers and pupils identify the items that will most improve their lives at PHS so your support really will make a difference!
To Keep up-to-date with fundraising activities ‘like’ our PHS Fundraising FB page https://www.facebook.com/pages/PHS-Fundraising/161119547255992
We hold events to raise money to buy resources which teachers and pupils know will make learning and teaching at PHS even better. We’ve managed to fund all sorts of things – from sports strips and equipment to make learning science and languages more engaging to dolls that help young people understand what it’s like to look after a baby 24 hours a day! But there’s still a long list of requests and only a few opportunities for you to contribute so please make time for this and come along.
A reminder that this weekend is Portobello Book Festival (Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th October). All events are free but ticketed and you can pick up a brochure and tickets at Portobello Library, 14 Rosefield Avenue , EH15 1AU. Venues are Portobello Old Parish Church Hall, Bellfield Street and Dalriada, 77 Promenade. The Festival is form 3-5 October More on their website www.portobellobookfestival.blogspot.com Some venues are already full, although if you go along to the venue on the day, there may be some returns
Also Portobello Market 9.30am to 1.30pm in Brighton Park Saturday 4th October. Autumn is upon us and the vibrant colours it brings are bringing a smile to everyone’s life. Sounds a lot like Portobello Market!. Come along for a bit of shopping for things you can’t get anywhere else in Porty. Buy a snack and sit at the tables watching the world go by and listening to the live music by the Caleerie Buskers. Take a wander and buy something from the wide variety of traders offering everything from handmade soaps to organic cheese; plants to garden furniture and wood crafts; organic mutton to condiments & oils; organic fruit & veg, fresh bread, homemade jams and coffee to handmade sweets and textiles to African vegetarian cuisine! Wow, that’s a big choice! Check out the website for further details of all the stallholders. See you there, Brighton Park, 9.30am to 1.30pm, Saturday 4th October.
Best wishes
Maureen
