Clean Up Scotland Edinburgh update

Posted on: February 18th, 2016

Hello,

Here’s your Clean Up Scotland update for events upcoming in your local authority area.  As expected it has been quieter over the winter period but as the weather promises to get better we are seeing more events getting registered every day.  We would like to hear from you about your plans for 2016 and as ever if you would like to see something from us, get in touch and we can work out a plan.

Get Involved

New toolkit available

Litter Pick Plus is a new innovation in Clean Up Scotland and looks at the wider elements that go into keeping an area clean and green.  The toolkit offers suggestions on how to add extra activities to your Clean Ups, how to communicate about your events and how to turn these into an effective local campaign.  Please feel free to use and share with your groups.

Additionally, if you are hosting an event around litter or environmental community work, I am able to give workshops about the toolkit with interactive activities. If you are interested in this, have any suggestions for improvement, examples of this happening in practice, send me an email.

Hero of the Month

We are looking to make 2016 a great year for Heroes.  If you know someone who works tirelessly to help tackle litter, consider nominating them as a Hero.  Heroes receive a litter picker, handihoop, gloves and a reusable high viz vest.  Importantly, it is a chance to have your local authority recognised at a local and national level with press releases and web stories.

It’s Your Neighbourhood and Beautiful Scotland

Do you know community groups who work tirelessly to improve their local environment through cleaning and greening up? Would you like to see them celebrate their achievements and receive support and national recognition for their work? Then please let them know they can register for Keep Scotland Beautiful’s annual Beautiful Scotland or Its Your Neighbourhood campaigns, both part of the RHS ‘Britain in Bloom Campaign’. 2016 is the 50th anniversary of the Beautiful Scotland campaign, and any group registering for either campaign will receive a free packet of corn marigolds to help spread the celebrations. To find out more see Beautiful Scotland or It’s Your Neighbourhood.

We are also seeking judges and assessors for some of our activities. If you are interested in the environment, enjoy meeting new people, team work and visiting inspiring projects then we would love to hear from you – click here for information on the roles.

Key dates

Time for a Clean (old Spring Clean): beginning around 21st March and running until the end of May

We are promoting Clean Ups throughout the spring period to give people the most flexibility to organise an event which suits their timetable.  It would be great to see events registered within all local authority areas within this time.  Let us know about your plans and what you would like to see from us to support you and your community groups.

Each spring we like to refresh the campaign by joining up with a group on an event.  If you have an event already in mind and would like to work in partnership with us, get in touch.  We can provide organisational support and share events within our newsletters and social media.

We are currently in discussion with Greggs about gaining sponsorship for this year and more information will be released once it has been confirmed.

Clean for the Queen:  3rd-5th March

We are supporting Keep Britain Tidy with their Clean for the Queen weekend by sharing numbers of participants who have registered on our website.  There are Clean for the Queen specific resources available on their website but if you wish to receive the yellow Clean Up Scotland tabards then events will have to be registered with us on the Clean Up Scotland pages.  Any queries, get in touch.

Let’s Clean up Europe: 6th-8th May

European wide Clean Up events which we will be supporting again this year.  More details on this to be released when they are confirmed.

That’s all for this month.

All the best,

Nik
