Brighton Place Sett Reconstruction – update 26 April

Posted on: April 26th, 2018

We have received an update from City of Edinburgh Council on the planned reconstruction of Brighton Place with setts:

  • Sett reconstruction work will be carried out from the railway bridge to Portobello High Street.
  • The contract to carry out the work has yet to be awarded, therefore, there is no official start date. However, it is proposed to start on site at the end of July/start of August.
  • The current duration of works is estimated to take 60 weeks.
  • The works will take place in four phases, allowing access to side streets at all times. Attached is a drawing showing the four phases.
  • There will inevitably be disruption resulting from through traffic being prohibited from Brighton Place for over a year but the phased approach is will minimise the level of disruption to local residents.
  • Lothian Buses will be diverted throughout the duration of the works. The diversion route has been discussed and agreed with Lothian Buses.  Attached is a copy of the diversion route.
  • To facilitate active travel:
    • It is proposed to introduce a 1.5m strip, from the kerb, of flat-top setts along the full length of the northbound carriageway.
    • It is proposed to introduce a 1.5m strip, from the kerb, of flat-top setts from Rosefield Place to the railway bridge on the southbound carriageway.
    • Whilst we accept that cyclists will have limited access to the flat top sets on the southbound carriageway due to parked cars, this will future proof the street if it was proposed to introduce an east-west cycle scheme using Brighton Place.
    • A further improvement to cycling in Brighton Place will be to introduce an island near the entry to Christian Path. This will provide cyclists with additional protection when making the right turn onto the Christian Path on the northbound carriageway.
  • Disruption & further consultation
    • We understand that there will be disruption in the local area as a result of the works.
    • The measures that are being proposed should ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.
    • It is important that businesses and residents are informed, in advance of any works starting, of how the works will be carried out and details on the traffic management, works phasing, closures and programme timescales.  Therefore, we propose to carry out two letter drops.  One well in advance of the work starting to local businesses and a second letter drop to local residents.  This will give both businesses and residents the opportunity to feed into the process and have any queries they may have prior to works starting.
