Brighton Place Sett Reconstruction – updated 27 September

The following information is the most up-to-date Portobello Community Council has on the City of Edinburgh Council’s programme to reconstruct Brighton Place with setts. It is based on information presented to traders at a meeting on 19 September and an earlier meeting on 28 August. It was updated 27 September with final bus diversion details from Lothian Buses.

  • The contract was awarded to Mackenzie Construction
  • Preparation will begin on site, Tuesday 25 September, the road will remain open
  • The road will close to through traffic on Monday 1 October for phase 1 of construction between Portobello High Street and Lee Crescent
  • Bus diversions will start  Monday 1 October
    • Service 21 – between Portobello High Street and Duddingston Park South, buses will be diverted via Abercorn Terrace, Joppa Road, Musselburgh Road, Milton Road East and Milton Road (Duddingston Crescent) in both directions. Please note that buses will operate non-stop between Windsor Place and Duddingston Crescent on this diversion.
    • Service 42 – between Seafield Road East and Duddingston Road, buses will be diverted via Portobello Road, Northfield Broadway and Mountcastle Drive North in both directions. Will not directly serve Portobello.
    • Service 49 – between Wakefield Avenue and Duddingston Park, buses will be diverted via Portobello Road, Northfield Broadway, Mountcastle Drive North and Duddingston Road in both directions. Will not directly serve Portobello
    • Service 69 – between Portobello Road (Inchview Terrace) and Portobello High Street (westbound), buses will be diverted via Portobello High Street (eastbound) and terminate at the eastbound bus stop at Windsor Place. Return journeys will start at the westbound bus stop at Windsor Place.
    • Interchange between these and other services to/from Portobello will be available in Portobello Road (21, 26 & 124) and Duddingston Park South (21)

  • Brighton Place will reopen to through traffic on Saturday 1 December, and close again on 7 January 2019 for phase 2. This will allow Brighton Place to be open during the Christmas trading period
  • All four phases are estimated to take upto 60 weeks to complete
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout
  • Local access, signed “local access only”, to all properties on Brighton Place and streets leading off will be maintained throughout
  • Other local roadworks and diversion will be in operation when Brighton Place is closed
    • Long term closure of Baileyfield Crescent for residential construction
    • Scottish Gas Networks work at Duddingston Crossroads
    • Resurfacing at Willowbrae
  • Traffic light timings will be monitored and altered where required
  • City of Edinburgh Council are proposing a number of measures to support local businesses
