Maureen Child Update 8 March 2019

Posted on: March 8th, 2019

Dear All

I was going to tell you about the Tram decision this week, but I could not put it better than my colleague Councillor Scott Arthur in his blog.  Scott writes here:  https://drscottarthur.scot/2019/03/02/shooting-for-the-moon-thoughts-on-taking-the-trams-to-newhaven-in-a-binary-political-world/ Before you ask, I have spent many hours asking questions and scrutinising documents.  This is not  decision taken lightly – by anyone.  I voted this week at Finance and Resources Committee to award the tram contracts subject to a decision at Full Council next Thursday. I now have absolutely no hesitation in voting in favour of extending the tram to Newhaven next week.

A lot of us local bookworms are hugely excited about the prospect of a bookshop opening in Portobello where Mike’s Tackle Shop used to be.  More of the story here: https://www.thebookseller.com/news/new-indie-bookshop-open-edinburgh-965096

Can you to put in your diaries a Coffee Morning at St Marks Church with bacon rolls, home baking, crafts, books and tombola on Saturday 30 March from 10am.  Please do come and bring family and friends!

It’s not on this week’s roadworks list, but residents have had notice that Brunstane Road is to be closed at the bridge from next week for the duration of the Brighton Place works. Watch this space!

I spent this morning at the COMPACT Board Meeting which is our citywide partnership with the voluntary sector.  I picked up a link to this fabulous website about what volunteering means to people.  Real life stories: enjoy! – and maybe share yours? http://myvolunteering.org.uk/explore/

The new Castlebrae Community High School Planning Application Notice (Ref:18/100431/PAN) went to Committee this week, taking the project a step nearer to starting on site later this year.  Using the reference, you can look up the proposals on the Council’s website planning portal.  Whenever I paste a link to a planning application, it doesn’t work. So I am not going to try!

TOMORROW, Saturday at Portobello, remember, is the Edinburgh Fair Trade Festival in Portobello Town Hall, 10.30am to 3.30pm with lots of fun things to do for all the family.  See you there?  Have a fun weekend!

Maureen
