Maureen Child Update 8 November 2019

Posted on: November 8th, 2019

Dear All

Are you registered to vote?  If you are on the register, do you need a postal vote?

There are details on the Council website at http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20033/elections_and_voting/101/register_to_vote The deadline to be on the register for this election Is 26 November which is also the deadline to apply for a postal or proxy vote.

On Treverlen Park, the ROSPA inspection report was completed on Wednesday, the builders removed the fences and the new public park is now open for the communiuty to use.  The official, formal opening date has yet to be decided.

As Returning Officer, I convene the first meeting of the new Craigmillar Community Council (CCC) is on Tuesday 12 November at 7pm at The White House (red room at the back). It’s an open meeting and everybody is welcome. One of the items on the agenda for the new CCC is how to mark the Centenary of the amalgamation of Craigmillar with Edinburgh.  Four of us – Rachael Cloughton, Andrew Crummy, Johnnie Stanton and me, have set up a new charity, ‘Craigmillar Now’.  We intend to put together an exhibition of archive material to help mark those 100 years. Craigmillar has such a rich community history which is well worth celebrating.  I hope that Rachael can come along and talk about what we might do together in 2020 and beyond.

It’s a big weekend coming up for St. Martin’s Church, 4 Magdalene Drive, with their Autumn Fair on Saturday between 10am and 12 noon and Community Cinema at 7pm. showing the recent hit ‘Yesterday’. And on Sunday St Martin’s Remembrance Service starts at 10.45am. They would love to welcome you at any or all of these events.

For one or two days between 14 and 19 November, depending on weather conditions, Queen’s Bay Crescent and South Morton Street will have some temporary parking restrictions so that the Council can repair the carriageway with ‘micro-asphalt dressing’.

Portobello Heritage Trust are working with Nicky Bird, Porty Art Walk, on a project titled The Decorators. Nicky is working with women who were once decorators with Buchan’s Pottery. As part of her project, Nicky has organised a public event from 2-4pm on Saturday, 16 November. There will be an introductory walk and the chance to go inside one of the kilns. Those who wish to attend this event should meet at the kilns in Bridge Street. There is currently an exhibition in the City Art Centre about Portobello born artist Mary Cameron: Life in Paint. The exhibition runs until 15 March 2020. Admission is free. For more details see www.edinburghmuseums.org.uk/whats-on/mary-cameron-life-paint  The exhibition features over forty rarely-seen artworks from public and private collections, complemented by historic photographs and archival material. It certainly sounds as if it is worth a visit.

Huge congratulations to Castleview Primary School who won the UK Rolls Royce Science and Technology Award for their fabulous work in the school and in partnership with the University of Edinburgh and the Centre for Regenerative Medicine in the nearby Bioquarter. Castleview won both the Eden Prize and Overall Winner. A massive well done to Kate Carter for leading the winning Castleview team and their great ongoing project ‘People Like Me Can Do STEM’. See the Castleview video here: https://careers.rolls-royce.com/united-kingdom/educators-and-parents/science-prize#$v=rolls-royce696  The new Castlebrae Community High School has been designed around such fabulous teamwork and will have a real focus on science. I have attached the latest newsletter about the build.

That’s all for now.  Do let me know if you want ‘updated’ on anything else.

Best wishes for a good weekend.

Maureen
