Maureen Child Update 25 November 2021

Posted on: November 26th, 2021

Dear All

Portobello Community Council meets on line on Monday with quite a packed agenda, including a researcher for the National Trust for Scotland asking us how locals use and enjoy Newhailes House and grounds. More here: http://www.portobellocc.org/pccpn/2021/11/22/community-council-388th-meeting-agenda-november-2021/

Some Porty households missed brown bin garden waste day as it moved from Friday to Wednesday at the start of the new season.  We were notified with the letter that came with our new yellow sticker.  If yours was missed, and you can’t wait, do let me know and I’ll try and get it lifted. If you don’t use the Council garden waste service, and still want to, you can sign up from 1 December 2021.  More at https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/gardenwaste

Scottish Water fixed the broken sewer on Portobello beach, at the Figgate Burn outflow, at the end of last week and they were doing CCTV surveys of the surrounding sewers this week.

The City Plan 2030 is in the statutory Representations phase and the team are keen to get feedback.  You can be sure the house-building industry will be pushing their own interests and communities need to have their voices heard too.  https://planningedinburgh.com/2021/11/23/city-plan-2030-update-4/

Fun Fiddlers will be busking on the Portobello High Street next to the Christmas tree at 7pm on 9 December (weather permitting!) if anyone would like a wee outdoor jig.

The Thistle Centre for Wellbeing is having a Christmas comedy night. Tickets here:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/thistle-christmas-comedy-night-tickets-192248760217

The Portobello/Craigmillar Ward small grants fund is open for applications.  See here: Portobello and Craigmillar Community Grants Fund – Edinburgh Partnership

I saw feedback from one local Dad of a young baby who went to a Dads Rock group in Bellfield last week and found it helpful and worthwhile.  Click here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/portobello-dads-babies-group-tickets-195113980167

A brilliant interview here with Andrew Crummy about community arts and its genesis in Craigmillar:  https://www.buzzsprout.com/1726942/9557044?fbclid=IwAR2qSiTMtyNLgreQdvtdCh1SnbsDVed2F-ALZki1JNOLSO8BB6Y0qAqCfh0

‘Seen and Heard’, the first of Craigmillar Now’s community’s collaborations with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra finished up this week.  Among other things, the group produced this amazing song:  https://m.soundcloud.com/user-43249140/the-parliament-of-crows?si=808f7b5047554a0490358a49f9af89e4&fbclid=IwAR2JRuh6h_TBS_apVjsgzZm452-3oSZH_uWn-iZ-NOe6SRwOktwXJt-KqaE.  I love it!

Craigmillar Now are seeking proactive and enthusiastic Trustees to support the local arts charity as we enter our second year of operation.  More information at https://craigmillarnow.com/.  Scroll down to info section at the end. Deadline: 4 January 2022 at 6pm.

Have a great weekend!

Maureen
