MULTI MEMBER WARD PLAN

1. Antisocial Behaviour

2. Housebreaking and other Theft

3. Drug Dealing and Drug Abuse

4. Assault and Violent Crime

3.

CRIME UPDATE

Our main priority, after ensuring that we respond appropriately to all crimes and incidents reported daily, is also to make sure officers prioritise the issues that you people tell us concern them the most. These are included in our local ward plans and cover housebreaking, drug dealing, violent crime and antisocial behaviour.

Below is the East Edinburgh Neighbourhood Area year performance update for period 01/04/14 – 31/03/15

(Policing area covering both the Portobello & Craigmillar and Craigentinny & Duddingston wards)

Overall crime

  • Has reduced by 10.3% or 610 offences.

  1. Antisocial Behaviour

  • Reports of anti-social behaviour are down 12% (155 less incidents)

2. Housebreaking and other Theft

  • Domestic housebreaking is down 22% (43 less homes)

  • Business housebreaking is also down 26% (67 less premises)

  • Solvency is currently 44% and there have been a number of significant arrests of key offenders.

 Vehicle crime

The results around vehicle crime have also been positive. This is a local ward priority and is often an important indicator of overall acquisitive crime in an area.

  • Theft of motor vehicles is down 31% or 51 cars

  • Break-ins to cars has reduced significantly by 24% which equates to

           100 less vehicles.

3. Drug Dealing and Drug Abuse

  • Following some excellent information from the public, we have recovered

over £180,000 worth of drugs and ensured that the dealers are placed

behind bars where they are unable to harm our community.

  • We will continue to gather intelligence from the community to identify people and properties involved in illegal drug offences, to obtain and execute search warrants, detect and deter offenders and remove illegal drugs from our streets.

4. Assault and Violent Crime

  • Common assault reduced by 11% (63 less victims)

  • Serious assault increased marginally 29 this year (from 27 last year).

  • The solvency for serious assault was 82.8%

Importantly the majority of significant violent robberies at premises i.e. recent  robbery at Ladbrokes at Portobello High Street was solved quickly and resulted in imprisonment.

Domestic abuse

  • The work to protect victims of domestic abuse has also continued

apace this year, and in over 80% of cases we have managed to gather

enough evidence to ensure that the offender is reported to court.

  • To protect victims further we also carry out regular Court Bail checks

to ensure they are safe upon release. Last year we carried out 170 of

these checks within a 24-hour period. This is a significant challenge to

achieve but is an extremely important exercise and no doubt deters

                 further offending and protects victims.

4.

LOCAL MATTERS

In comparison to previous year, reports of anti social behaviour have halved during April although 8 incidents were reported over the course of the Easter holiday period with an upsurge in anti social behaviour involving disturbances by youths and damage to a number of vehicles. The local Community policing Team increased foot patrols in the affected areas that has resulted in a number of persons being identified and reported for offences, involving threatening behaviour, vandalism and assault. Positive lines of enquiry are continuing and liaison with partner agencies is being made to ensure a robust response and to curtail future occurences.

We continue to support the Community Alcohol Partnership to target underage

drinking to reduce the sale of alcohol to young people and work with parents to raise their awareness on the dangers of “proxy” buying.
