1. Portobello Promenade Surface
Our Roads Officer will be carrying out a survey of the prom in the next two
weeks (wet weather needed) to identify dips/ponding.
2. James Street – Road and Pavement Repairs
The Roads Team has identified a number of localised subsidence at this
location and is now working towards organising permanent repair patches
with minimal disruption to local residents over the next two to three months.
3. Finger Posts
The finger posts are now scheduled to be cleaned, repainted, refurbished and
re-fixed by the workshops. We had hoped for them to be completed in April,
but due to urgent work demands we have now been advised that they will
likely be completed in May – June. We will keep you updated on their
progress.
4. Neighbourhood Environment Programme (NEP) 2015
The NEP schemes for this year were agreed at the last Portobello &
Craigmillar Environment Sub-Group (1 April 2015). They are as follows:
- Improve path beside garages from Niddrie Mill Avenue to Duddingston Park South £ 12,000
- Magdalene Medway parking spaces – joint project with Area Board £ 20,000
- Improve path opposite no. 14 bus terminus to Greengables £ 12,000
- Electricity supply to Prom Cakestand £ 6,000
- Variable Information Sign at Seaview Terrace £ 5,000
- Path at Magdalene Drive to Avenue to shops £ 16,000
- Estimated Total £ 71,000
The next P&C Environment Sub Groups will be held at the East
Neighbourhood Centre (101 Niddrie Mains Road) on 3 June at 6:30pm.

5. Portobello Beach – Watercrafts Exclusion Zone
An exclusion zone for watercrafts has been reintroduced this year to allow
safer water usage for swimmers. The Portobello Sailing and Kayaking Club
will test marker buoys this week to ensure the correct buoyancy weight is
used. Following testing, the remaining marker buoys will be rolled out and
signage will be installed within the next two to three weeks. A notice to
mariners has been issued by the Forth Ports Authority to help support this
scheme.
6. Brighton Place Setts Lifespan – Update
I refer to your previous PCC minutes notes of 26 February 2015.
Sean Gilchrist wishes to clarify his discussion regarding sett lifespan. Factors
such public utility company activities, traffic loading/usage, and weather
conditions can make it hard to accurately establish sett longevity. However in
general terms, the Council would be aiming to achieve a 25-40 years
construction lifespan.
7. Traffic Management, Project Phasing and Trader Consultation
The Roads Team is aiming to have a clearer view on where this project is on
the Council’s Capital Works Programme by August/September 2015. Once
this contract has been developed further over the summer months, the
Council will invite representative from Portobello Community Council.
8. Abercorn Park
The fencing has been purchased. We will keep you updated with any
progress on the installation.
Unsightly dirt patches have recently appeared in the
grassed area of the park. These are most likely caused by
a few overzealous dogs on the hunt for buried treasure.
We wish to keep the park clean and safe for all park users
and will be displaying in the park’s notice boards reminders of dog walker
etiquette. We would kindly ask PAS to help us spread the word and raise
awareness among its members.
9. Rosefield & Brighton Parks – Spring Cleaning
The Rosefield & Brighton Parks Resident Associations have organised a litter
picking event on 9 May 2015 (time to be confirmed). They hope to see you
there!
10. Grounds Maintenance
We are currently reviewing our weed management programme for the
upcoming spring/summer months. We will provide you with further details
once a spraying schedule has been finalised.
11. Environment Wardens
Our Environment Wardens continue to patrol the area for dog fouling, littering
and trade/domestic waste violations (excess waste, pavement obstruction,
etc.) Please get in touch if you would like to highlight any areas of concern.
12. Portobello Beach – Busy Season
Porty Beach’s high season is just around the corner.
Additional large bin along the Promenade have been
placed to help keep the beach clean and tidy for all to
enjoy. We would kindly ask if PCC members could
help us reduce the amount of litter by asking visitors to
bring litter home if possible. Also, when disposing of
portable BBQs, please ensure that they are extinguished before disposing
them in bin. Enjoy the warm weather!
