Maureen Child Update 8/5/2015

Posted on: May 8th, 2015

Dear All

Rev. Dr. Stewart G. Weaver Minister of Portobello and Joppa Parish Church tells me they are marking 70th Anniversary of VE Day.  The Church will be open from 2.30pm-3.30pm TODAY, Friday 8 May, to mark the victory of Allied Forces in Europe at the end of WW2.  As at the Cenotaph and many other places around the country, there will be a 2 minute silence at 3pm, marking the moment when the end of the war was announced.  This will be preceded and followed by the ringing of the bell and music.  Candles will be available to light in remembrance as well.  You would be very welcome to join them –  and thousands of others round the country.

Duddingston Primary School Fair takes place tomorrow, Saturday 9 May from 10am – 12 Noon.  The school community aiming to raise money towards renewing and improving musical instruments, maths and science equipment and sports uniform.

Portobello Open Door (POD) Film Night is tomorrow 9 May at 7pm in the Wash House Community Centre, 3 Adelphi Grove.  They’re showing “Birdman” this month. For more information click here: http://www.the-pod.org/film-night.html

This Sunday TEDX comes to Portobello.  To find out more and bookmark the page to watch it live: tedxportobello.com/livestream/  The blurb says: “The speakers selected for TEDx Portobello came from nominations made by the community. Their diverse perspectives are sure to inspire the town to see things differently in 2015. For that we thank the speakers for taking part, and Portobello for being so active in shaping the event taking place at Tribe Porty in May”.

The UK Parliamentary General Election results for Edinburgh’s five constituencies were announced at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. See here:
http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20112/election_results/651/uk_parliamentary_elections_resultsTommy Sheppard has been duly elected as local Member of Parliament for Edinburgh East and I congratulate him on his success.

I would like to put on record my huge appreciation for the unstinting work of my friend and colleague Sheila Gilmore who has represented Edinburgh East for the last five years and with whom I have worked in a solid local partnership.  We didn’t always agree on every single issue, or how to tackle it, but Sheila is was always willing to listen, discuss and debate with any or all of us.  Sheila and her staff team were truly fantastic advocates for any constituent in trouble or difficulty of any kind.  She will be a very, very hard act to follow.

The next Planning Committee is being held at 10am on 14 May and it will be dealing with the Local Development Plan – including consideration the proposal to re-designate of the contentious Brunstane site as housing land rather than Green Belt, against which there are now over 800 petition signatures.  Please find attached the agenda and link to full papers for the Planning Committee in the Main Council Chamber. Have a good weekend!

Best wishes

Maureen
