Portobello Conservation Area Character Appraisal – Student Survey

Posted on: March 23rd, 2015

In October 2013, the Planning Committee approved a review of the City’s character appraisals and Portobello was identified as a priority (report attached). As well as a revised format, the intention is that community groups and stakeholders should be more involved in the development of the review.  The revised Grange Conservation Area Character Appraisal was recently approved and is an example of the new format and approach.

As a start to the review process, the Council is working with the postgraduate students undertaking an MSc in Architectural Conservation. As part of their studies, they are required to research and produce an analytical report on the Portobello Conservation Area which hopefully will help to inform the Council’s review.  As part of the brief, they have been strongly encouraged to think about Portobello as a place and to involve the community and visitors in considering the character and appearance of Portobello.

The students have provided the attached survey and are asking members of the community to provide responses to help them to develop a draft revised Appraisal.
